Yoga as a practice and lifestyle has continued to prove aid in many areas of life; in health and well being, in muscle gain, in body alignment, in social development and other areas of life. The practice of yoga has also served as a therapeutic exercise for various disorders, especially those affecting sound mind and mental health.
Several disorders are related to mental health, and some of them usually occur as a result of traumatic events, old age, stress, and mismanaged lifestyle. What is insomnia?
Insomnia is a sleeping disorder which is characterized by lack of sleep, difficulty to stay asleep because you will wake very early and then find it difficult to fall back asleep. Sometimes you may also not fall asleep at all. Some of the symptoms of insomnia include weakness when you wake up, and this can affect our day to day living since it ruins your mood and drains your energy.
Even though most health personnel consider sleep for adults to be at least 7-8 hours, rest may vary from person to person. It is also natural for most adults to experience short term sleep disorders such as insomnia, where they lack sleep or experience shortened sleep for some period of days due to anxiety and stress coming from the many responsibilities of adult life. Lack of sleep may also come from the occurrence of traumatic events or can be associated with medical conditions.

- Waking up earlier, especially in the middle of the night.
- Weakness and not-feeling like you have rested even after a long night sleep.
- Fatigue, tiredness, and sleepiness during the day.

Just as mentioned earlier, the benefits of yoga are not limited to improvement on core strength, flexibility, general physique. It can also help in a lot of ways to combat insomnia because it helps to improve the state of mind and public mental health, especially because insomnia is a disorder of the brain.
When people with insomnia make out time to make yoga a mindful practice daily, they experience great results because they will have a relaxed mind to aid sleep, patients will also be able to fall asleep faster and return to sleep quickly if ever they wake up in the night.
Older people too who have insomnia do find strength during the day after a satisfying sleep when they practice yoga.

We have read in the past article, how yoga can help one to battle stress, anxiety, and other symptoms that can spike the onset of insomnia. When we practice yoga, we are indirectly fighting anxiety and stress, which are the significant links by which insomnia can get in and ruin our lives. The relationship between insomnia, stress, anxiety, and depression is still in view of research, but this family does share a deep connection.

Obesity, which is also known an excessive weight gain, is linked or associated with many other diseases of which insomnia is one of them. When we gain too much weight, we are liable to suffer from insomnia. Yoga, however, is useful when it comes to weight loss and can help us get back to a healthy body mass index to help us stay smart and far away from insomnia.
Researchers in the medical Harvard school researched how the regular practice of yoga can help people to get better sleep, and they found out fruitful results in both quantity and quality. This study included people with a different kind of insomnia; the primary and secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is a disorder that arises on its own without any health defect, while secondary insomnia refers to the type that occurs due to the manifestation of another illness or disease.
Details of the Research.
The subjects for this research had sleep diaries where they recorded their sleeping patterns, amount of time slept, and the number of times when they would awake in the night or in the middle of sleep. After two weeks, they were introduced to an eight-week regimen of basic yoga. The participants in these eight weeks did not stop keeping a record of any changes that may occur in their sleeping patterns.
After eight weeks, evaluations were carried out, and they discovered that their conditions had improved. Even though only 20 people had completed the essential yoga practice, there was a significant improvement in their sleeping cycles.
